A discernment process is a time of looking at what is the deepest desire that you have in your heart. God calls us through our desires and wants us to be joyful in following the call and in striving for that desire. This is a time of determining whether or not you do have a call to religious life.

The vocation director of a religious community can help you discern to which type of religous life you are being called. A vocation director can help you discover the best match of your gifts and personality with a particular community's mission and spirit. This is usually a very informal process and takes from six months to a year of meeting monthly. It may include participating in activities and informal gatherings with the Notre Dame community as well as just talking about your feelings.
