The people of Sulaco are hard-working and resourceful. They live with shortages of clean water (Sr. Joan has remarked that showering with brown water is not one of her favorite parts of the experience), shortages of electricity, medical care, safe food, communication and transportation systems, and basic human services. The people of Sulaco, especially the women and children, learned new skills during the creation of building materials for the nutrition center. They learned to create roofing tiles and concrete blocks for construction. Many simple, sturdy homes have been built using these newly-learned techniques.
