Many of the young women of Sulaco and surrounding villages attend
the Madre Teresa Academia. Some rise before dawn and travel hours
to reach the school. Using donated sewing machines and supplies, and
without the benefit of patterns or modern technology, they learn to
make sophisticated clothing for themselves and their families. They
learn to make crafts to sell, to help support their families now and
in the future. Some of the young women who have graduated from the
Academia have returned to help teach others. Sister Joan (Sister Juanita,
as she's called in Sulaco) works hard to acquire fabric and supplies
for the girls to use. |
