The
purpose of the Notre Dame Ministry Fund is to support the good works that
the Sisters do to meet the unmet needs of others. This type of gift allows
the Sisters to work at jobs that pay little or no money in order to serve
the disadvantaged. It allows Sisters to take jobs that pay far less than
what they might receive elsewhere, so that they can be working where the
Notre Dame Charism can be followed. For
example, there is one Sister living in an economically depressed area of
the midwest whose ministry is to care for the elderly who have no support
system of relatives nearby. Another Sister volunteers to help bring Czech
and other European Catholic high-school age students to the United States
for a year of study, so that they can return strong members of the Church
and be a light for others. Other Sisters who have passed "retirement
age" continue to work just as hard as before, but now as volunteers
in the same parishes and communities. One Sister has taken the Notre Dame
Charism to Honduras, where she helps young rural women learn social and
job skills. As a community, the Sisters volunteer their time, skills and
supplies to educate local faith communities about domestic violence and
to help faith communities raise support money for the existing transitional
housing program sponsored by Catholic Charities. Your gift to the Ministry
Fund supports all this, along with the teachers, nurses, chaplains,
spiritual directors and parish workers who are the Notre Dame Sisters. |
